About Sitka, Alaska

Sitka, Alaska is a wonderful travel destination steeped in rich history, diverse activities and scenic beauty unlike any other place you'll visit.

Located on Baranof Island, Sitka was the state's original capital (Territory of Alaska) and even earlier was the capital of Russian America. You'll find the native Tlingit culture well-represented throughout the area. Totems, paintings and memorials celebrate this important heritage as natives preserve their culture through dance, local artwork, tributes and song.

Sitka's an enchanting getaway. Rent a sea kayak, take a walking tour, take some pictures, hit a bucket of balls, enjoy fresh seafood, bike the island, go flightseeing or take a bus tour, it's all here. There's more to do in Sitka than most have time for and many things you'll want to enjoy a couple of times!

And that's only the tip of the iceberg!

There's the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system that makes regular stops in Sitka Alaska and can carry you at a leisurely pace to another beautiful Alaskan town. Extend your trip and take in more of Southeast Alaska or add a couple days to the beginning of your trip and visit Juneau, Ketchikan or Scagway. Whatever you do you'll want to make Sitka your stop for fishing... it's the most productive water in a state known for its' superior fishing opportunities.

You're encouraged to check out the Sitka Alaska Convention and Visitor's Bureau website for travel and activities ideas (www.sitka.org). You may want to plan some additional time to take in the whole region --- southeast Alaska is very special, filled with incredible scenery, wildlife and activities --- it's definitely worth your time to stay.
